Full Anaylsis of One Music Magazine

NME is the longest published music magazine in the world. It was first launched in 1952, and since then NME has always been a success. Every week it proves the audience with the latest and up to date music and best albums and singles. The award winning http://www.nme.com which was launched in 1966, has grown to be one of the biggest commerical music sites in Europe. Its current readership is 411,000 and the circulation is at 56,284. The target audience for NME is around 17-30 year old, with around 73% of the readers being male, and 27% being female. The website and the magazine both contribute to the target audience by showing the latest gigs and festivals that are happening within the year, so this shows that the people reading the NME magazines and visiting the website enjoy the music and festivals that are being presented and therefore are liked by the younger generation. It is a weekly published magazine, which can be a regular feature or item to buy in a persons life. I believe that the magazine is based mainly for students, due to them having the money to pay for this magazine every week and also having the time to read it. With the cover price being £2.20, it is affordable for students to purchase on a weekly bases. The advertising in NME's magazine and shown on the website would also be a big part of the readers life. To be interested in the magazine, you would also have to be interested in the stuff that NME are advertising. For example, the advertising shown in MNE's magazine are McDonald's, Budwiser, brands such as Vans, Converse, aftershaves and perfumes like Hugo and Diesel; these items would relate to the reader as part of their life. The younger generation are known to be fashionable and be wearing the latest trends and brands. By advertising brands such as Vans, it fits well with the target audience NME has. Mcdonalds is a good advertisement to have in NME because students are classed and seen as lazy, and who don't cook for themselves, so by showing fast food, its perfect for them as its quick, simple and cheap. Budwiser is also a good advertisement to add into NME as students are known to excessively drink, therefore publishing Budwiser and other alchohlic drinks would fit nicely. They also advertise things that would suit or help students such as The Guardian, The Sunday Times etc.

Location/props/setting

I decided that i would use Fritton Woods as my location to take the photo's I needed for my front page, contents and my double page spread. Because my magazine was a 60's based magazine, i choose to write about Jimi Hendrix and highlight his life, and him at Woodstock. This is why i choose to take my photos in the woods, as it was though he was there at Woodstock getting ready to perform. I didn't really have a set costume design for my magazine, which if i think about it now, i probably should have. I added the neck scarf and tied it around his head to give the 1960's affect. If I could redo my photoshoot for my magazine, i would keep with the same location, yet i would have my model dress in a more old fashioned way, or try to dress my model similar to what Jimi Hendrix did. I used the neck scarf and the cigeratte as my props, this was just to give the effect of where he was and what was happening, also Jimi Hendrix was a smoker.
Another photo that i took was of a girls leggings. I thought that it would be good to present a picture to show the fashion section that i would have in my magazine. That picture is located on my contents page next to 'Fashion'

I used this image as part of my double page spread.
I also used three smaller photos which i placed at the top of my double page spread.
I got the idea to do that when i anaylised an article with Solange Knowles. (right)

This is the image that i used for my front cover ->

I also used a similar photo for my contents page background, along with other photos, featuring what was going to be in my magazine.

Draft Front Cover & Draft Contents Page

Before making my
magazine, I needed to make a draft of how I was going to
set it out. I
decided to have my masthead at the top of the page on both my front cover and my
contents page. On the front cover i wanted the main image presented in the left
column of the page, the image has trees in the background so I decided to leave
space to show the location. The cover lines around the main image link with what
is included in the magazine, and the main cover line links with the main image.
I placed the date and the volume number at the top of the page, underneath the
masthead, so that the readers are fully aware what issue they are purchasing. In
my contents page, I also included a main image however I faded the image so that
you can still see that an image is the background.
I separated the contents
page, and decided to put a picture either side of what was being featured in my
contents page.

My Mood Boards
Mood Board 1
: section &
target audience

I believe that the images i have included in my mood board represent who my
target audience would be, and what sort of things my target audience would be
looking for in my 1060's themed music magazine. With my pictures, i wanted to
show that; even though my magazine is a music based, it also includes news and fashion. I decided to include news into my music magazine so
that people that purchase this magazine would understand what happened in the
1960's, and including fashion, people would look back and see what was
fashionable and how much it has changed over the years.
I believe that my
target audience for this magazine would be the older generation so men and women
around the age of 45+
I wanted to create a magazine that people could relate
to and look back on.

Mood Board 2 : Fonts And Colours

With this mood board, I wanted to show the different
fonts and colours I considered using when making my magazine. Because my
magazine is a 1960's bases music magazine, I was unsure of what font to use. I
experimented with different fonts in different sizes, in the end I decided to go
with a Forte font (in italics) for the masthead and contents
page, and the main cover lines around the magazine i decided to have in capitals Perpetua Titling MT which is a thin large font. I decided to use these
because I thought with the italics it would give that 60's effect, whereas the
large thin writing would stand out.
I also wanted to try out different
colours with the different fonts, I used stroke as well as used the different
effects available. With my main image on my front cover taken in the woods, so
the colours were brown and green, i needed a colour which would stand out as
well as suit the idea of a 1960's music magazine for males and females. I used
red, yellow and black as my three main colours. I didn't want to use anymore
than three colours as i thought that would make my magazine look messy and
untidy. I also thought that them three colours worked well together.

Mood Board 3: Advertise

For my magazine, i was unsure whether to
have old advertisements published in my magazine or up to date ones, however
because my magazine is based in the 1960's, i decided and found some
advertisements that have been going for years and that i thought were suitable
for my target audience and my magazine. I decided to use food and drink as my
main advertisements along with various fashion brands and car companies. I think
i have chosen a wide range of advertisements to include in my magazine, this is
a good thing as it doesn't bore the audience; they can relate to these
advertisements in everyday life.
